The Coming of The Railroad by Francis John Miller

About this piece

The Coming of the Railroad is a colorful mural located in the vestibule of the Capitol. On the right side of the mural is a 19th-century steam locomotive engine with a crew. A group of colorful figures and symbols adorn the right side of the mural. The characters include a sheriff, a gambler, and a gunslinger. The mural is meant to display the changes the railroad brought to the State of Nebraska.

The six mosaics on the walls inside the foyer were commissioned in 1967 to celebrate Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial.
